Thinking that a Disney World Deluxe resort is always the best choice for your family? Think again. Here’s why value and moderate resorts often win for families — and when Deluxe actually makes sense.
You’re planning a Disney World trip, and you want the best for your family. So naturally, you start eyeing the Deluxe resorts such as the Grand Floridian, Wilderness Lodge, and Animal Kingdom Lodge. They’re gorgeous. They ooze Disney magic. And they come with a price tag that’ll make your eyes water.
But here’s the truth most Disney planning guides won’t tell you straight: Deluxe resorts are not automatically the best choice for families. Depending on your kids’ ages, your touring style, and what actually matters during your trip, a value or moderate resort might be the smarter pick.
The Real Cost of Staying Deluxe at Disney World
Let’s start with the most obvious factor: money.
Deluxe resort rooms regularly run $500–$1,000+ per night, and that’s before park tickets, dining, and the inevitable light-up Mickey ears your kids absolutely must have. A week at a Deluxe resort can easily add $3,500–$7,000 in lodging costs alone compared to staying at a value resort (though you can definitely save by renting DVC points!).

That’s a lot of money that could go toward:
- Extra park days
- A Disney dining plan or table-service meals
- Memory Maker for photos
- A future trip entirely
For many families, the extra money spent on a Deluxe resort is money taken directly away from the experiences inside the parks, which is where the real Disney magic happens anyway.
Does the Room Size Actually Matter for Families?
Deluxe rooms are larger, yes. But if your family is spending 10–12 hours a day in the parks, you’re really only using that room to sleep, shower, and change. Young kids especially won’t notice or care whether they woke up in a beautifully appointed room at the Polynesian or a perfectly comfortable room at Pop Century.

Theming That Kids Love
Here’s something that surprises a lot of first-time Disney dads: value resorts like Art of Animation and Pop Century have some of the most kid-friendly theming on all of Disney property. Giant Nemo characters. Enormous Incredibles statues. Lightning McQueen. Your kids may actually prefer the over-the-top pop culture energy of a value resort over the more refined, adult-leaning atmosphere of, say, the Grand Floridian.
Art of Animation also offers family suites that sleep up to six people, a genuine advantage over many Deluxe rooms, and often at a fraction of the cost.
On-Site Perks Are the Same Regardless of Resort Tier
This is the big one that many families overlook. Every Disney resort guest (value, moderate, or Deluxe) gets the same core perks:
- Free Disney transportation (buses, monorail, boats)
- Early Theme Park Entry (30 minutes before regular park opening)
- The ability to book Lightning Lane and dining reservations at the same time
You don’t get a better Lightning Lane booking window at the Grand Floridian than you do at All-Star Movies. The playing field is level once you’re inside the parks.
When a Deluxe Resort Does Make Sense for Families
To be fair, there are real scenarios where paying for Deluxe is worth it:
Location-Dependent Convenience
Deluxe resorts on the monorail loop (the Contemporary, Polynesian, and Grand Floridian) offer unmatched access to Magic Kingdom. If Magic Kingdom is your primary park and you have very young kids who need frequent nap breaks back at the resort, that walkable or monorail-quick access has genuine value.

Similarly, if you’re staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge, the savanna views and wildlife experiences are something no value resort can replicate. That’s a real, unique experience.
Club Level and Special Occasions
If you’re celebrating something major (a milestone birthday, an anniversary trip, or a “bucket list” Disney vacation) Club Level access at a Deluxe resort offers lounge perks, food spreads, and concierge service that can make the trip feel genuinely elevated. For the right trip, it’s worth it.
