Thinking about ditching the stroller at Disney World? Here’s how we knew our child was ready — plus tips for navigating Walt Disney World on foot with kids.
One of the biggest parenting transitions at Walt Disney World isn’t taking your first trip with a stroller — it’s realizing your child may finally be ready to leave it behind.
For years, the stroller has felt essential at Disney World. It carries tired kids, snacks, water bottles, sweatshirts, souvenirs, and, honestly, sometimes your entire sanity. But eventually comes the bittersweet milestone every Disney parent faces: deciding whether your child is ready to tackle the parks on foot.
And if you’re nervous about making the switch away from a stroller at Disney World, trust me, I was too.
There’s No “Right” Age to Stop Using a Stroller at Disney World
Deciding whether to stick with a stroller or try the theme parks without one isn’t an easy decision. My family has visited Disney World every year for as long as I can remember, and I always brought my stroller on every trip. After all, the stroller is one of the most crucial items you need for a Disney vacation with a young child. But when your child is starting to forgo the stroller at home, it’s time to weigh the decision: Should you bring a stroller, or should you leave it at home?
We made the jump from stroller to no stroller at a unique point in time. After taking a 2-year pandemic-induced break from Disney World, when we finally returned to our annual Disney World vacations, my son no longer used a stroller in our everyday lives.
While I wanted to make sure he could explore the theme parks without a stroller, I wasn’t sure if he could walk a full day at a Disney park.
Renting a Disney World Stroller Was a Game-Changer
So, I decided we needed a stroller for our trip. I no longer owned a stroller, so for this trip, I decided to rent one from Disney. This turned out to be a game-changer (in fact, I would have done this on all my previous trips if I’d known it was so easy and convenient to rent from the parks!) There was no fumbling with a stroller on Disney transportation, and getting on and off the bus or boats to the parks without a stroller was so lovely.
If you’ve never rented a stroller from the parks, you can find stroller rental services at each entrance once you are inside. All the locations are available on your My Disney Experience app. You have the option to rent for just one day or multiple days.

Yet on our first day at Magic Kingdom, after renting a stroller, getting my son settled, and storing some items, I was unsure of my decision. Suddenly, I felt he was too big for a stroller.
However, my initial idea to rent a stroller proved to be the right move. My son hadn’t been to Disney in a few years, and having the security of the stroller helped him take breaks from walking so we could make the most of our park day and avoid tiring him out.
Ultimately, as a mom, I was also grateful to have that stroller to offload heavy items. But in those first moments of him sitting in the stroller as a “big kid,” I knew this would be the last time we’d need a stroller – and I would miss it.
If you rent a stroller for multiple days, keep your receipt and show it at each park’s rental service for a convenient, hassle-free way to have a stroller available each day you visit.
Making the Transition to Exploring the Parks by Foot
It was bittersweet knowing we were taking our last Disney World trip with a stroller, all because my little guy wasn’t so little. And, I’ll admit, I loved having a stroller for a busy Disney park day because it’s so helpful!
If you want to pack a lot of extras, like water, extra clothes, rain gear, and other supplies, having a stroller to store these items when you get to the park is so handy. I relied so much on having the extra storage. You don’t have to overload a backpack and carry it around all day. If you’ve found a great souvenir at the Emporium on Main Street, U.S.A. and want to avoid carrying it around or having to go back at the end of the day to purchase it, you have stroller storage!

A stroller is so convenient that transitioning to park days without relying on one is quite different and a bit more challenging. I myself was nervous about how exploring the parks with my son on foot would change my Disney World experience.
On our first completely stroller-free trip (the one after I rented a stroller), I had to learn to pack differently for my park day. Gone were the days when I could overload my backpack, knowing I could offload the weight. Ultimately, my packing methods needed to be more strategic: Instead of bringing everything I might possibly need, I brought only the necessary essentials.
Disney World Without a Stroller Is Surprisingly Freeing
Once we finally took a fully stroller-free Disney World trip, I quickly realized there were major advantages I hadn’t expected.
We no longer had to search crowded stroller parking areas after attractions. We didn’t need to worry about someone accidentally grabbing our belongings. Entering shops, restaurants, and ride queues became noticeably easier. And perhaps best of all, we moved through the parks more naturally. Without a stroller, our Disney days felt simpler.

My son also absolutely loved the independence that came with walking the parks himself. He wore a kids’ fitness tracker and turned the trip into a game by tracking his daily step count.
That said, we definitely adjusted our pace. Without the stroller as a backup option, we became much more intentional about taking breaks. We stopped for snacks more often, slowed down when needed, and made sure not to overpack our schedule.
Ironically, that slower pace ended up making our Disney vacation feel even more enjoyable.
It’s Okay If You’re Not Ready Yet
If your child still uses a stroller at Disney World, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Disney parks are exhausting, even for adults. Strollers can make vacations smoother, less stressful, and more enjoyable for the entire family.
But if you’re on the verge of making the transition away from one, know that there’s also something exciting waiting on the other side. Exploring Walt Disney World without a stroller feels like an entirely new chapter of family travel — one that’s a little more independent, a little more flexible, and yes, a little emotional too.
And while I still occasionally miss the convenience of stroller storage, watching my child confidently walk through Disney World on his own made me realize we were both more ready for the transition than I thought.
