Before you ride, know what to expect. These popular Disney World attractions have surprise drops, dark scenes, loud moments, and other details that can catch young kids off guard. 

Disney World is exceptional at creating attractions that the whole family can enjoy together. But not every ride across the resort’s four theme parks is truly “family-friendly” — and even attractions tailored to the youngest guests aren’t always exactly what parents expect. Some have unexpected drops, others get surprisingly dark, and a few include loud or semi-frightening moments that can catch little kids off guard.

Whether you’re confident in your kids’ ability to ride anything without worrying or nervous about a darkness-induced meltdown, knowing what to expect before you board can help you decide what to ride with little ones in tow (or at least give you a heads-up so there are no surprises once the ride begins).

Frozen Ever After Has a Surprise Drop

At first glance, Frozen Ever After looks like a gentle boat ride through Arendelle. And for the most part, it is. You’ll float past Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and other familiar faces — but then you’ll reach the ride’s biggest surprise.

Near the end, the boat travels backward before dropping down a small hill in the dark. It’s nowhere near the intensity of a roller coaster, but it’s enough to startle children who aren’t expecting it. If your little one is nervous about drops, it’s worth mentioning ahead of time so they know it’s coming.

Pirates of the Caribbean is Darker Than You Think 

Pirates of the Caribbean has been a Magic Kingdom favorite for decades, but it isn’t quite as tame as its classic status might suggest. It’s truly a dark ride, with limited lighting that can frighten kids as soon as the boat takes off. Oh, and shortly after boarding, you’ll encounter two small drops before entering a series of darker pirate scenes, too.

And if your kids aren’t fans of out-of-nowhere noises or slightly scary imagery, along the way you’ll pass skeletons, cannon blasts, gunfire, and pirates battling throughout the town. Most children handle it just fine, but younger or more sensitive riders can find parts of the attraction a little intimidating. A quick conversation beforehand can go a long way toward making the experience less scary.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is Scarier

For older kids and adults, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway isn’t remotely frightening. And with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse starring in the adventure, it’s easy to assume this is one of Disney World’s calmest, most kid-friendly attractions. But it’s scarier than you’d think, especially for young kids who are worried about being in actual danger.

The trackless ride vehicles dart from room to room, the music gets loud, and several scenes become pretty chaotic in true cartoon fashion. Many kids absolutely love it, but toddlers who prefer slower-paced rides may find parts of the attraction a bit overwhelming. The waterfall, tornado, and even final escape scene can all frighten the youngest riders.

Peter Pan’s Flight is Also Dark

Peter Pan’s Flight has long been one of the most popular attractions at Magic Kingdom, and it’s easy to understand why. Boarding a pirate ship that appears to soar above London is pure Disney magic.

But it’s another classic dark ride, and that can be problematic for toddlers who don’t fare well in dark environments. The suspended ride vehicles travel above the scenery rather than along the ground, and several scenes are fairly dark. If your child is hesitant about heights or darkness, letting them know they’ll be “flying like Peter Pan” beforehand and note that it’s a very short trip through those dark scenes..

Winnie the Pooh Can Be Surprisingly Intense 

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh is another attraction that seems like a completely gentle ride — and for the most part, it does deliver. Guests bounce through the Hundred Acre Wood alongside Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and friends before entering the memorable Heffalumps and Woozles sequence.

This scene is where young guests can get spooked. Everything suddenly becomes louder, darker, and more colorful than the rest of the attraction. The atmosphere and lighting change quickly, and whimsical characters that seem larger than life pop up all around you. It’s meant to feel like a dream, but for some younger children, it can be too startling and confusing.

Figment’s Imagination Can Get a Little Weird

Journey Into Imagination With Figment is one of EPCOT’s quirkiest attractions, which is part of its charm. But parents should know it includes several sensory surprises.

Throughout the ride, there are sudden loud sounds, moments of darkness, bright flashes, and even a burst of skunk smell that catches plenty of first-time riders by surprise. Most kids have no problem with these effects, but children who are especially sensitive to loud noises or unfamiliar sensory effects may appreciate knowing what’s coming.

The good news is that every child is different, and plenty of young guests happily ride all of these attractions without any concerns. A little preparation simply helps set expectations, making it easier for everyone to relax and enjoy the experience.
