Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass vs Universal Express Pass: Comparing the Cost and Experience

by | Nov 25, 2024 | Tips & Tricks, Walt Disney World

Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass and Universal’s Express Pass both offer a shortcut to your favorite attractions, but they each bring something different to the table in terms of price, perks, and flexibility.

Whether you’re a Disney fan looking to make the most of your day at the Most Magical Place on Earth or an adrenaline chaser eager to experience all Universal has to offer, we’re here to help you navigate the choices.

Let’s dive in and compare the cost and experience of these popular skip-the-line options to see which one best fits your park plans.

Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass

Disney’s Lightning Lane Premier Pass (LLPP) offers the ultimate flexibility, allowing guests to skip the lines at select attractions at Walt Disney World with instant access to Lightning Lane queues—no need to make reservations or wait around. With average wait times under 10 minutes and rarely exceeding 15, it’s a real time-saver.

However, this convenience comes at a premium, with prices ranging from $129 up to $449 per person plus tax, depending on the park and date. Keep in mind, though, that LLPP is limited to a single park per day, so it can’t be used across multiple parks on the same day.

Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass Pricing

LLPP pricing depends on the park and date, with rates ranging from $129 to $449 per person, plus tax, and higher costs generally falling during peak periods.

For example, let’s look at November 20, 2024, at Disney World:

  • Magic Kingdom: $359
  • EPCOT: $209
  • Hollywood Studios: $289
  • Animal Kingdom: $129

Universal Express Pass and Unlimited Express Pass

Universal’s Express Pass gives guests the advantage of skipping the standard lines at select attractions by simply joining the Express Pass queue, effectively cutting down wait times.

Universal estimates that with Express Pass, a 60-minute wait could be reduced to around 30 minutes or less. Unlike Disney’s offerings, Universal provides an Unlimited Express Pass option, allowing unlimited rides on eligible attractions throughout the day. Plus, guests staying at Universal’s top-tier hotels—Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort—enjoy complimentary Unlimited Express Passes for the length of their stay.

Universal Express Pass Pricing

Prices for Express Passes range from $90 per person plus tax for a single-park, one-day pass to $360 per person plus tax for a two-park Unlimited Express Pass, with rates varying based on the season and demand.

Universal’s Express Pass prices also vary based on demand and date, starting at $89.99 and going up to $289.99 per person, plus tax, for the Unlimited version. Prices for the two-park Universal Express Pass start at $104.99 and $134.99 for Universal Express Unlimited

For example, let’s look at November 20, 2024, at Universal Studios:

  • Universal Studios: $130
  • Universal Islands of Adventure: $140

Disney Lightning Lane Premier Pass vs Universal Express Pass

A key difference to keep in mind is that Disney’s new Lightning Lane Premier Pass is not available as a complimentary perk for Deluxe Resort guests, while Universal’s Express Pass has long been a benefit for certain hotel guests.

One reason for this difference is Disney World’s significantly larger number of Deluxe Resorts, meaning far more guests could potentially receive free Premier Passes. Offering complimentary Premier Passes to every Deluxe Resort guest would likely result in Lightning Lane lines becoming as lengthy as standby queues, undermining the intended benefits of the pass.

Final Verdict: Lightning Lane Premier Pass vs Universal Express Pass

Disney’s line-skipping options are intentionally priced to limit widespread use—encouraging guests instead to choose the Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass options or to splurge on a VIP Tour experience. LLPP seems aimed at guests who either missed out on booking a VIP Tour or prefer a less costly alternative.

In contrast, Universal’s Express Pass is not only more affordably priced, but guests staying at select hotels even receive a complimentary Unlimited Express Pass, enhancing the overall value.

To skip all the lines at Walt Disney World, compare the cost of booking a VIP Tour for your group with purchasing individual LLPP passes for each person. At Universal, consider staying at the Hard Rock, Royal Pacific, or Portofino Bay hotels, where every guest in your room receives a complimentary Unlimited Express Pass.
