Dad’s Flight Wizard Tool Thingy

Dad has found a tool (Dad’s like tools) that will help you find the cheapest flights to Orlando possible. (Ladies, it’ works for you too.) Don’t believe me? Try it out for yourself. If you can find a better cheap flight search tool, let me know. I’ll change.

Just enter your travel information here.

Enter the airport you want to travel from, the airport you want to travel to (MCO) and click on the date boxes and select the dates you want to travel.

You will see several options to choose from. You can choose 4 options but make sure to check out at least 3.

Important advice

Dad’s in a good mood, so, here is some advice for booking your flights to Orlando.

  • Watch times closely. The lowest priced flights usually aren’t the best for a trip. It’s silly to pay $375.00 per night for a premium hotel when you arrive at 2:00 in the morning.
  • Watch for long layovers on your flights to Orlando. I’ve seen flights that arrive Orlando very late and the next flight listed, which costs $5.00 more, arrives around 2 or 3 hours earlier. Sometimes cheaper isn’t necessarily better.
  • Flights to and from Tampa (airport code TPA) are sometimes quite a bit cheaper than flights to Orlando. It’s 90 miles away and an easy hour and a half drive.
  • Southwest Airlines, AirTran Airlines and some of the other low cost airlines don’t show up in discount search pages. To get prices from them, you must go to the airline web site.

Step Two

Those sneaky airlines sometimes run unadvertised specials and don’t tell anyone about them. The big restriction is that you have to make reservation on the airlines internet site.

It usually pays to at least look and see if there are any specials. If you can book a flight to Orlando on Southwest, don’t skip this step.

Step Three

Include your airfare in your package. Dad’s partners at Destinations to Travel are full service travel agents and can add flights to your package with no problem. All you have to do is say the word and before you know it you’ll be jetting your way off to the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Hidden Fees

The “major” airlines and some of the minor airlines have “hidden” (out in the open) fees that will jump up and turn a cheap flight to Orlando into a really expensive trip to the city of Magic. Some airlies charge a bag fee (up to $40 per bag for checked bags), some airlines even charge for carry-on bags.

Some airlnes charge you extra if you want to pick your seat. Most will charge something extra if you want a special seat (exit row or even regular seats with extra leg room). Even Southwest Airlines which ridicules these extra charges will gladly accept a $10 each way payment if you want to bump up your place in line.

Travel Insurance?

Do you need it?

As your friendly neighborhood travel agent let me make a recommendation (feel free to do whatever you want with it).

If you’re flying to Walt Disney World, at least price travel insurance. It can come in handy in these days where the airlines are experiencing record delays, more lost luggage than ever, and are less and less inclined to make changes to tickets.

I think it was Yogi Berra that said…

Just like all insurance, you don’t need it ’till you need it.

When to reserve your flights

When to make reservations for your flight to Orlando is a little tricky. The major airlines, except Southwest and Air Tran, publish their flight schedules 335 days, or so, out. Southwest Airlines updates their schedule about every 3 months. But they only publish 4-6 months in advance. If you can fly Southwest Airlines, you should wait until they publish the flights for your travel dates. Air Tran publishes about 4 – 5 months in advance.

I suggest you book your flights to Orlando as soon as you can. There might be a cheaper price later, but I wouldn’t bet on it.
