Your child is finally ready to ride Disney World’s roller coaster! But when choosing that first thrill ride, it’s essential to ensure that their is enjoyable and not overwhelming. Choosing the right first roller coaster will help them assess their comfort level with such rides (or, if you make the wrong choice,  them away from thrill attractions altogether. 

My son was initially hesitant about thrill rides, even though he met the height requirement for these attractions. However, once he finally decided to give them a try, he quickly overcame his fears; he’s since enjoyed every roller coaster Disney World has to offer.

It’s an ideal way to assess whether your child enjoys roller coasters and is ready to tackle more exhilarating rides. Bonus: There’s usually not a long wait for this ride, so you won’t have to worry about nerves building in long lines. 

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

If your child has successfully conquered the Great Goofini’s Wild Ride and is eager for something bigger and more thrilling, they might be ready to experience the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Located in Fantasyland, this is the most popular coaster at Magic Kingdom.

Experiencing it at night is a lot of fun!

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad 

While you’re in Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is an excellent option for older kids and also suitable for younger thrill-seekers who enjoy excitement. Located in Frontierland, it is known as the wildest ride in the wilderness for a reason. It’s a lot of fun and is sure to become a favorite among thrill-seekers.

This popular ride features sudden drops and sharp twists and turns, offering a more intense roller coaster experience. While it may be overwhelming for some younger riders, those seeking a bigger thrill will find it to be an excellent choice. 

Slinky Dog Dash

When visiting Hollywood Studios, Slinky Dog Dash is a fantastic roller coaster for your child to experience for the first time. This Toy Story Land ride is more thrilling than The Barnstormer; it’s faster and features more drops, yet it maintains a kid-friendly theme and storyline that makes it enjoyable for everyone. 

It’s an excellent choice for kids and families, ranking among the top rides at Disney World. My family loves it, and it’s definitely worth riding multiple times throughout the park, both during the day and at night. 

Keep in mind that the lines for Slinky Dog Dash can be pretty long, but the intricate details in the queue help make the wait more enjoyable. If you want to ensure your child experiences this coaster without a long wait, consider using a Lightning Lane. 

Every child is unique, and their comfort levels with thrill-seeking rides and roller coasters at Disney World can vary significantly. Until your child has the chance to try these coasters, it’s best to steer clear of the more intense experiences, such as Space Mountain and Expedition Everest. Starting with a milder coaster will help your child build confidence and ensure an enjoyable experience for their first roller coaster ride.
