Wondering where the best Disney World air conditioning spots are? We’re sharing the top places to cool down in the parks.
No matter what time of year you travel to Walt Disney World, the odds are good that it’s warmer than wherever you are used to. Some of the hottest months of the year are also the most popular times for visitors, and that’s more a function of school vacation time than anyone’s desire to get subtropical.
The Disney World Air Conditioning: The Best Spots to Cool Down
So how do you prevent the Florida heat from running you down and keeping you from getting your money’s worth of magic? Work some of these islands of air conditioning into your plans and you’ll emerge refreshed and rarin’ to go!
The Best Spot in Magic Kingdom
Carousel of Progress
Air conditioning is not just a load of cold air, but the application of said cold air over time. A two minute trip on Peter Pan’s Flight is only going to do you so much good. Ditto a gift shop that you pop into for a moment or two. But the A.C. in Tomorrowland’s relentlessly optimistic animatronic retro-futuristic masterpiece Carousel of Progress will cool you right down over its 22 minute runtime… and with the theatre you are sitting in rotating from scene to scene, you couldn’t leave early if you wanted to. By the time the final refrain of “Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” rings out, you’ll feel fully human again and ready for fun!
Runner Up: Hall of Presidents
Another cast of animatronic thespians keeps Liberty Square safe for refreshment (and democracy) with some seriously frosty Air Conditioning. Without smuggling a thermostat past security, any opinion on the raw cold power of the attraction as opposed the Carousel of Progress is purely anecdotal, but in spite of a one-minute-long runtime advantage for Hall of Presidents, I’m giving the crown to Carousel of Progress based on the “No Escape” angle. Ideally you should experience both, spread out throughout your Magic Kingdom afternoon. You. Are. Welcome.
The Best Spot in Disney’s Hollywood Studios
For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration
Located in the Echo Lake area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the chill you feel when you experience this extremely silly show is not just the decor and your imagination running away with you. The A.C. gets cranked good and proper, probably to settle down the throngs of little girls in Elsa costumes who have been blasting imaginary ice powers at each other for the last half hour in the queue. This show will delight the whole family with the antics of the Royal Historians of Arendelle and a parade of much-loved guest stars who retell (and re-sing) an abridged version of the first Frozen movie. It’s a good half-hour long, the chairs are comfy and the air conditioning is just excellent. Schedule your visit for mid-day and cool the family down for an afternoon run at Galaxy’s Edge or Toy Story Land.
Runner Up: Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant
Putting a restaurant on this list feels like a bit of a cheat, but the time spent devouring delicious cheeseburgers in novelty booths styled after classic convertibles does keep you stationary long enough for the very pleasant air conditioning to do its work. What seals the deal is that the drive-in theater motif keeps the entire space bathed in perpetual twilight, which reinforces the “evening” cool the family will all enjoy.
The Best Spot in Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Festival of the Lion King
There’s a lot of walking to be done in any Disney park, but Animal Kingdom has actual walking trails, and you’ll be sweltering after a summer day spent exploring them. Head to the Africa area for a show that has everything you need. Singing! Dancing! Acrobats! Trampolines! Enormous parade floats! All this and so much more to keep you pinned to your seat for 30 minutes while some seriously chill-tacular air conditioning works its magic on you. A feast for the eyes and a chill-chest for the rest of you!
Runner Up: Finding Nemo: The Big Blue and Beyond
It’s the Broadway-style musical adaptation of your Disney / Pixar favorite that you didn’t know you needed! Like Festival of the Lion King, the Finding Nemo musical captivates you with brilliantly inventive visuals, catchy tunes and favorite characters. Well worth the trip to the Dinoland USA area, this attraction misses the A.C. at A.K. crown by about 5 minutes of runtime that Simba & Co. has over it. Keep your family cool and happy – schedule both shows in your Animal Kingdom day plans.
The Best Spot in EPCOT
The American Adventure
I am, by nature, a large mammal, and I run hot, so please understand that I do not throw a statement like this around casually, but the American Adventure is COLD. It is downright brisk. If you can survive your journey halfway around the World Showcase to the America Pavillion, this patriotic retelling of the story of America has 45 minutes of maximum negative BTUs that will slap you into cryo-sleep and prepare you to complete your circumnavigation in both comfort and patriotic furor.
Runner Up: Spaceship Earth
The American Adventure is a hard act to follow, but Spaceship Earth, located in World Celebration, shares an approach that works for Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant, plunging the rider into perpetual twilight to reinforce every joule of its air conditioning’s cold power. This is coupled with a ride vehicle that points you at whatever you are meant to be gazing upon at any given moment, preventing you from overheating or exhausting yourself by having to turn your head, even a little. It all equals 16 minutes of air-conditioned goodness.
The Best Air-Conditioned Spots at Disney World Resorts
The Lobby
Disney resorts take pride in creating unique experiences for their guests. However, there is one area in which they all share one goal, ensuring a state of climate controlled comfort for the weary travellers who darken their door. One place where they all tend to show that off is right inside the front door. Pull up a chair in your Disney resort’s lobby and chill out. Of course, you are at this point just steps away from the real A.C. Champ:
Your Resort Room
And here we have the real champion of chill, the one place that puts the thermostat right in your hand (or at least conveniently on the wall nearby) – Your own resort room! The only problem is that you have to leave the theme parks to properly appreciate it. But with this list of in-park cooling stations, you should be able to wring out every dollar’s worth of fun, no matter how hot it may get!
Special Honorable Mention
Before you go, I did want to give special recognition to this very specific resort refrigerator, the most super-powered shiver shack I know: the interior hallways at Animal Kingdom Lodge resort. The last time we stayed there, after walking back through the hotel from the pool, my wife not only reported that she was “freezing”, but she took a hot shower to warm up. In Florida. In August.
Now that’s brisk!
