Disney Vacation Club, often shortened to DVC, is Disney’s vacation ownership program. While it’s technically a timeshare, it works quite differently than the traditional timeshares many people picture. Instead of purchasing a fixed week at one resort, members buy annual Vacation Points. They use those points to book stays at Disney Vacation Club resorts and, in some cases, other travel experiences.
For families who visit Walt Disney World regularly, Disney Vacation Club offers more than a place to stay. Larger accommodations, home-like amenities, and access to Deluxe Resorts can completely change the pace of a vacation. Many families spend more time enjoying their resort and less time rushing from attraction to attraction.
Of course, Disney Vacation Club isn’t the right fit for every traveler. Membership is a significant financial commitment, and understanding how it works is essential before deciding whether it’s worth the investment. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is Disney Vacation Club?
Disney Vacation Club was introduced in 1991 as Disney’s answer to traditional vacation ownership. Instead of returning to the same resort every year, members use a flexible points-based system. That gives families much more freedom in how (and where) they vacation.
Today, Disney Vacation Club includes more than a dozen resorts at Walt Disney World. Members can also stay at resorts near Disneyland, Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, Aulani in HawaiÊ»i, and The Cabins at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort.

Most Disney Vacation Club resorts are attached to Disney’s Deluxe Resorts, meaning members enjoy many of Disney World’s most desirable locations. Whether you’re walking to EPCOT from Disney’s Beach Club Villas, riding the monorail from Bay Lake Tower, or overlooking the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Villas, the resort becomes part of the vacation.
Unlike booking a traditional hotel room, Disney Vacation Club accommodations are designed for longer stays and family travel. In addition to Deluxe Studios, many resorts offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom villas. These include separate bedrooms, living areas, full kitchens, multiple bathrooms, washers and dryers, and private balconies.
How Disney Vacation Club Works
Instead of reserving hotel rooms with cash each year, Disney Vacation Club members purchase a real estate interest at one of the participating resorts. That purchase comes with an annual allotment of Vacation Points, which renew each year for the life of the contract.
Those points become the currency members use to book vacations.
Every Disney Vacation Club resort has a point chart that assigns a different number of points based on several factors, including the resort, room type, view, season, and length of stay. A Deluxe Studio during a slower travel period may require relatively few points, while a spacious villa during the holidays can require significantly more.

One of the advantages of the system is its flexibility. Members aren’t required to take the same trip every year. Instead, they can decide how they want to use their points based on their family’s vacation plans. One year might mean several shorter getaways in Deluxe Studios, while another could involve saving points for a weeklong stay in a larger villa that accommodates grandparents or extended family.
Disney Vacation Club also allows members to bank unused points for a future year or borrow points from the following year, making it easier to plan for larger vacations without losing the value of points they don’t use immediately. That flexibility is one of the features that separates Disney Vacation Club from more traditional timeshare models.
DVC Point Rental
Although purchasing a membership is the most well-known way to experience Disney Vacation Club, it’s not the only option. Many members rent out their unused points, allowing other guests to reserve Disney Vacation Club accommodations—often at rates lower than booking the same room directly through Disney. Renting points has become a popular way for families to experience Deluxe Resort accommodations before deciding whether membership makes sense for them.
Member Perks
While spacious accommodations are the primary reason many families choose Disney Vacation Club, eligible members may also enjoy a variety of additional benefits through Membership Magic. These extras can change over time, but they add another layer of value for members who visit Walt Disney World regularly.
One of the most popular perks is access to Moonlight Magic, complimentary after-hours events held at select Disney parks throughout the year. These special evenings feature shorter attraction waits, complimentary snacks, entertainment, and rare character appearances that aren’t typically available during regular park hours.

Eligible members may also have access to Disney Vacation Club lounges located inside Walt Disney World theme parks. These lounges provide comfortable seating, complimentary refreshments at select locations, charging stations, and a welcome place to relax during a busy park day.
Additional Membership Magic benefits may include discounts on dining, shopping, tours, recreation, and select special events. Disney periodically updates these offerings, so available benefits can change from year to year. It’s also important to note that some Membership Magic perks are reserved for members who purchase directly through Disney rather than on the resale market.
