Headed to Disney World for spring break? Make sure you pack your patience – and prepare with my expert tips.

When my kids were little, we were homeschoolers – which is not without its ups and downs. One of the biggest “ups” was that any time could be Disney vacation time! But when we made the jump from a nontraditional school schedule to one that came with official holidays and designated time off, going to the Most Magical Place on Earth at the same time as everybody else was a big adjustment.

The springtime season of staggered school holidays we call spring break is one of the busiest times of the year at Disney World. But there is family fun to be had in spite of those crowds. As a dad who’s been there and visited Disney World for spring break, below I’m sharing a handful of simple tips that can help you make your trip magical (and not stressful!).

Pack Your Patience

You can pretty much guarantee Disney World will be busy throughout the entire spring break season – which runs from the beginning of March right through to Easter. Lots and lots of families had the same idea as you (which really just proves that you were right, when you think about it).

So, smart guy, what are we going to do about it? We’re gonna be like a couple of Fonzies. (Cool. We’re going to be cool.) We’re going to avoid the crowds where we can and smile where we can’t, because we’re all together in just about the greatest place there is, and there’s no need to stress about it at all.

The more patience you arrive with, the more smoothly your Disney World spring break vacation will go. Plan for delays, plan for meltdowns, plan for long wait times – and you’ll be able to keep your cool.

Make the Most of the Season

Are you traveling from a cold-weather state? Spring break is the lead-up to summer, which means it’s a chance to get out of the snow or gloomy overcast weather and home. Once you get to Florida, it is well and truly spring… to us anyway. The locals might still be clad in hoodies and complaining about the rain, but we’ll take it over snow any day!

At Disney World, springtime comes with a little extra magic, so I recommend taking full advantage of the season. Spring kicks off with the EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival, an experience that’s as horticultural as it is delicious, and best of all, free with your admission to EPCOT. This jump start into warm weather will have your whole family feeling like you’re officially on spring break – and it offers the opportunity to catch the entire theme park in bloom.

Plus, if you’re visiting with older kids, tweens, or teens who love music, the Garden Rocks concert series is an especially great festival-exclusive entertainment offering. Many of the bands who visit EPCOT during the Flower & Garden Festival are familiar to adults and kids alike, making it easy for everyone to get into a spring break-worthy mood.

Be an Early Bird

No one wants to wake up at the crack of dawn while you’re on spring break, but trust me: Getting to Disney World’s theme parks is the greatest advantage you have over those crowds.

A good percentage of your fellow spring breakers cannot or will not wake up early and hit the ground running. While they’re dozing or enjoying a generous plate of Mickey waffles, you can beat them to the theme parks. If you’re already out and about, arriving well ahead of park opening, that’s your chance to get on highly popular attractions and kick your park days off by accomplishing your must-dos.

This is especially true if you’re staying at a Disney World Resort hotel, in which case you’ll be gifted with an extra half hour of magic through Early Theme Park Entry, which is exactly what it sounds like: an opportunity to put some of the most desired attractions in your pocket and walk-on instead of queue up. It won’t last, but it doesn’t have to. You’ve already won.

I would give the same advice seven days a week, even outside of spring break at Disney World – but the busier the parks are, the important it is to be an early bird.

Take a Mid-Day Break (Seriously!)

Even if you’ve been to Disney World many times before, it’s a lot to walk – and see and do – day after day. Kids and parents alike can get crabby without breaks, so I highly recommend incorporating a mid-day break into your schedule. Take a break and head back to your resort for lunch, and you’ll get to enjoy both that Disney World magic and some classic spring break relaxation on your trip.

If you’ve sprung for Park Hopper tickets, taking a mid-day break essentially turns every day of your vacation into two! Thanks to that early start you got in the morning, by noon you’ve likely knocked out a goodly number of attractions, the day is already won, and everybody is ready for a bite to eat and a nap or a swim back at the resort. Don’t fight it! After a little rest, play, lunch, or just lounging in the room, everyone will feel rested and recharged (and happy!)… and you’ll be ready for park number two.

As an added perk, in addition to giving you and kids some downtime, taking a mid-day break also allows you to swap out your backpacks and park packs. After all, that Florida weather may be warm, but it’s unpredictable (if you don’t like the weather, wait a few minutes; it’ll change). During your break, you can re-pack your backpack, drop off jackets, and lighten the load you’ve been carrying for the whole family.

Plan Your Lightning Lanes

Disney World has several options when it comes to jumping the queue for a (not-always small) fee, and Lightning Lane Multi Pass is the one most families opt for. Lightning Lane is an opportunity to buy your way out of a very long line, scoring a spot in a much shorter line so you can ride more in less time.

While every version of Lightning Lane offered at Disney World can be a moderately pricey add-on – especially when spring break crowds drive up the on-demand pricing – but your odds of riding that one special attraction will be lower if you don’t spring for this extra. If you’re hoping to ride a hugely popular attraction and don’t want to wait in an hours-long line, it may be worth upgrading and paying for Lightning Lane. 

I recommend planning ahead and deciding which attractions are must-dos for your family. Then, you can assess whether they’re eligible for Lighting Lane Multi Pass or Single Pass, if you’re willing to pay for them, and if the whole family needs Lightning Lane. Unsure where to start?
