Disney Jr. Dance Party! is over, and I’m not going to miss it one bit – its replacement is so much more fun for kids and parents alike.

A big change took place at Disney California Adventure Park in spring 2025: the popular Disney Jr. Dance Party! took its final bow, closing permanently on short notice. In a park that doesn’t offer a ton of toddler- and preschooler-friendly activities, the closure of Disney Jr. Dance Party! was a huge loss. But as a parent myself, I’ll be honest. I’m glad this show shuttered.

Here’s why I’m glad Disney Jr. Dance Party closed (and trust me, you will be too!).

Disney Jr. Dance Party! Was Outdated and No Longer Relevant

Disney Jr. Dance Party! had been a staple at California Adventure since 2017. It replaced Disney Junior – Live on Stage!, which was a similar stage show themed around characters and TV shows from Disney Junior’s programming block aimed at kids ages 2 to 7 years old. 

Disney Jr. Dance Party! was a high-energy show starring characters from popular Disney Junior series like Sofia the First, Doc McStuffins, The Lion Guard, and Mickey and the Roadster Racers. Over the years, the show’s character lineup was updated slightly to feature new additions from Vampirina and Fancy Nancy. 

During each performance, Disney Jr. Dance Party! would engage kids with music, dancing, and plenty of interactive fun. Hosted by D.J. Deejay and Finn Fiesta, it was a party atmosphere that included video screens, special effects, and puppets, along with plenty of chances for little ones to wiggle and move.

But as a parent who took her toddler to Disney Jr. Dance Party! at California Adventure, I’m not sad to see it go. It was dated after nearly a decade-long run, and that’s primarily due to the characters in the show. Sure, the show evolved over time, swapping out some characters and shows. But overall, it simply didn’t feel like it kept up with today’s kids who watch primarily streaming-based platforms over live TV.

Plus, the characters and TV series featured in this dance party-based show were pretty dated. Doc McStuffins, for example, first started airing back in 2012 and ended its run in 2020. While it’s a show that can still be watched, it’s been five years since it was at a peak of its popularity. Similarly, Vampirinia started airing back in 2017 and wrapped its run in 2021. Even the appearance of Mickey and Minnie in the show is a bit dated, focused on Mickey and the Roadster Racers (or Mickey Mouse Mixed-Up Adventures as it’s also known), which also originally ran from 2017 to 2021.

That means there aren’t a ton of kids who fall in the prime viewing period for any of these Disney Junior shows. Sure, reruns (and streaming) still make them accessible – but I wasn’t even pregnant when all of these shows wrapped their runs. And toddlers and preschoolers now likely found these shows before their time.

Disney Junior: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! is a Better Show

In addition to being dated in its character choices, Disney Jr. Dance Party! was also okay as a show. It didn’t have the strongest storyline – it really was, at its heart, just a dance party. And while it let the kids get some wiggles out, it was a bit overwhelming.

The new Disney Junior: Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! is a far better show. Having experienced both the Disney Jr. Dance Party! and the new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! with my toddler in tow, I can confidently say the new show is both more engaging and entertaining.

To start off, there’s a clear and easy-to-follow storyline now: Mickey is inviting his friends over for a party, and he and Minnie need to track them down when no one shows up. And now, the characters are the stars, not the dancing. Kids will get grooving with Mickey and Minnie, yes, but also Goofy, Pluto, and Daisy.

Additionally, while the previous show featuring a lot of screen-centric activity and appearances by one character at a time (for the most part – Minnie did join Mickey onstage), Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! brings more characters into the real-world action throughout the show. So, if your kids absolutely love seeing characters, the new version is vastly superior. My son’s mind was blown when he got to see as many as five characters at the same time onstage.

And when it comes to interactivity, I find the music and dancing to feel far more natural in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! versus the old Disney Jr. Dance Party! The last time I caught the now-shuttered show, only two kids were dancing and involved. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!, on the other hand, had everyone joining the fun (and trust me: the music is far better as an adult, too).

The Kid-Friendly Show is Fun for a Wider Audience (and Features Better Characters)

While California Adventure’s previous kid-focused show did feature a number of popular characters, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! changes up the cast and focuses on characters who matter more: Mickey and friends.

This is especially great for kids who may not be too familiar with all of the Disney Junior shows – my son, for example, only watches select Disney shows and has limited screen time – because they’ll have more fun. Kids will recognize Mickey, Minnie, and (most of) the rest of the sensational six, regardless of whether or not they’ve tuned in to Mickey Mouse Clubhouse or the upcoming Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+.

As a result, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! has broader appeal. It appeals to a much larger audience, both kids and adults, who will enjoy seeing Mickey and friends (and all their hijinks). After experiencing the show myself, I can say it’s also far more engaging for parents. Now, instead of feeling like you’re watching yet another Disney Junior show, you’re catching a fresh story starring characters you yourself grew up with – no TV time required to enjoy it.

Previously, my son would sit quietly when characters he didn’t recognize, like Vampirina or Doc McStuffins, took the stage. But when Mickey and Minnie appeared in their Mickey Mouse Roadster Racers attire, he knew exactly who they were, despite never having seen the show before.

And, let’s be honest: Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the cast of characters in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! are Disney’s most popular characters. Who else do kids and adults want to see when they visit California Adventure? 

Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live!: What to Expect

Wondering what you and your little ones can expect when you catch a showing of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! at California Adventure? The goal of this show is to get kids dancing, singing, and burning off some energy.

The show stars Mickey and Minnie, but Goofy, Daisy, and Pluto make appearances. Sam the DJ joins the crew of characters as they come together for a party at the clubhouse – and he also serves as the show’s host, plumber, and electrician. Along the way, the characters and audience encounter everything from a busted shower to a blacked-out apartment to an avalanche of snow.

As these problems pop up, the theater introduces some kid-friendly surprises like snow (well, snoap), bubbles, and even confetti. For most toddlers and preschoolers, that alone is enough to make it a must-see.

Oh, and parents: You’re going to love this show during the summer. Not only is it a lot of fun for guests of all ages (yes, even if you’re not going to get up and dance!), but the show building is wonderfully air conditioned and kept very cool. It’s the perfect respite for overheated kids and adults on hot days.
