I only had one day to visit Disneyland, and I packed in as much as physically possible. Here’s everything I was able to do and how you can make the most of one day at the Happiest Place on Earth too!

How much can you really do at Disneyland if you only have one day? Surprisingly a lot! The exact number of attractions, shows, and things you get to will depend on when you’re visiting, your priorities, and how much you’re willing to walk on sore feet, but one day is definitely enough to get in most of the top rides and attractions in both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. How do I know? Well, I did it!

I recently visited Disneyland with a one-day park hopper ticket, and I’m sharing with you exactly how many rides I squeezed in, what shows I got to see, what I ate, and what I still had time for in between, plus how you can do it too!

What I Did In One Day at Disneyland

Here’s a quick snapshot of what I managed to fit into a single day across both parks with my husband in tow:

We rode 16 attractions, ate three full meals plus two snacks and coffee breaks, got in some souvenir shopping, and watched both nighttime shows inside Disneyland Park (including the Paint the Night parade and Wondrous Journeys fireworks). Plus, we even managed to see some smaller shows throughout the day, including the afternoon cavalcade, and we still could have done even more after the fireworks. Not too bad for a day of park hopping!

4 Keys To Making The Most of One Day at Disneyland

Now, I might be a Disney expert, but this was actually my first time at Disneyland. So, I’ll admit – I was a little intimidated! Here are the four strategies that made the biggest difference in our day, and what you can do to make sure you get to everything you want to do if you only have one day at Disneyland!

Have a Rope Drop Strategy

If you’re only spending one day at the Disneyland Resort, the morning hours are the most important. Wait times are at their lowest, Lightning Lane selections are at their best, and you can knock out many of the most popular rides before most of the crowd has even finished breakfast.

We started our day at Disney California Adventure instead of Disneyland, which is the less obvious choice, but that’s exactly why it worked. We hit WEB SLINGERS, Monsters, Inc., Radiator Springs Racers, Incredicoaster, and more before lunchtime, thanks to the lower crowd levels. Starting at California Adventure also let us grab early Lightning Lane return times for popular rides while availability was still wide open, and it was easy to select our next ride in Disneyland Park when we were ready to park hop.

So, be sure that you don’t waste the first few hours of the day on shopping, dining, or anything that can wait until the afternoon when crowds pick up if you only have one day at the parks. Those early morning hours are your most valuable window!

Know Your Priorities

You can do a lot in one day at Disneyland, but you can’t do everything – and that’s okay! The key is knowing what matters most to your group and making decisions on what you do based on that.

For us, the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival was going on during our visit, but food wasn’t our top priority. If it had been, we would have spent less time on rides and more time eating our way through the festival booths, and that would have been a perfectly great day! We’re also Disney World regulars, so we prioritized Disneyland-only rides and attractions over things we could experience back home, plus a few classic opening day rides just because we’re Disney nerds and wanted to experience them in their original home.

Ultimately, your priorities may make your day look entirely different than ours. If you’re visiting with little kids, you’ll want to spend more time in Fantasyland and go on gentler rides rather than hopping from one thrill ride to the next. If it’s your first visit to any Disney park ever, you might want to focus on the most iconic rides like Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain, Radiator Springs Racers, and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout. If you care more about the food and atmosphere, you’ll likely need to slow down, skip a few rides, and soak in the theming.

The great thing about Disneyland is that the resort is super compact. You just have to walk across a shared courtyard to park hop between Disneyland and Disney California Adventure! There’s no bus ride, no monorail transfer, and no 30-minute commute to your next park like there is at Disney World. That alone means you can do a surprising amount even at a relaxed pace.

Buy Lightning Lane Options

We know it’s not fun that skipping lines costs extra money, but if you only have one day, Lightning Lanes make a real difference in how much you can get done. Without it, we definitely would not have been able to ride as much as we did.

We purchased Lightning Lane Multi Pass for the day, plus a Lightning Lane Single Pass for Radiator Springs Racers (which is sold separately and often has one of the longest lines across both parks). Having both gave us the flexibility to bounce between parks and stay efficient all day.

If budget is a concern, even just Multi Pass on its own will give you a big advantage over the long standby lines.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

While Disneyland is relatively small compared to Disney World, there’s still a whole lot of walking involved! And, let me tell you, we did a lot of it!

From bouncing between Lightning Lane return times, shows, meals, and parks, we logged a lot of miles. In fact, our feet started hurting around lunchtime and got so sore that we had to call it a night about an hour before the park closed, even though we still had unused Lightning Lane reservations for two attractions.

So, don’t make the mistake of dressing for style over comfort! Be sure you have the best walking shoes on your feet for one day at Disneyland and all the walking that will involve.
