When you think about getting around Walt Disney World, you probably think in purely practical terms of buses, wait times, and the fastest way to get from point A to point B before a reservation or rope drop window slips away. Transportation is usually treated as something to get through, not something to enjoy.
But there’s one Disney World perk hiding within the resort’s sprawling (and sometimes complicated) transportation system: the boats. Disney boat transportation is more than mere travel between resorts and parks. It’s easy to overlook, but once you start using it, it has a way of changing the feel of your entire vacation.

Guests staying at resorts like Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, and Disney’s Wilderness Lodge can use water launches to reach Magic Kingdom, turning what could be a crowded bus ride into a calm cruise across Seven Seas Lagoon or Bay Lake. Over at EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Friendship Boats connect key destinations along the water, offering a slower — but far more scenic — way to travel between parks and nearby resorts.
There are also the Sassagoula River boats, which run between resorts like Port Orleans and Disney Springs as well as nearby properties like Saratoga Springs. These routes are often overlooked simply because buses are faster and more frequent, but that’s exactly what makes the boats feel like a hidden alternative.
Most guests default to the quickest option without thinking twice. But the boats aren’t really competing on speed. They’re offering something else entirely.

Boat rides naturally create pockets of downtime that are hard to find elsewhere in a Disney World vacation. Instead of rushing from one attraction to the next or navigating crowded walkways, you’re simply sitting back and moving across the water at a slower, more intentional pace.
This makes them especially useful between park hopping stops, after a table-service meal when you don’t want to immediately jump back into a queue, or during midday breaks when the parks feel at their busiest. In my experience, kids get a chance to decompress from the theme parks’ constant stimulation, and using boat transportation can allow everyone to reset and take a breather. There’s no pressure to “do” anything — and odds are if you have very young kids under 5 years old the boats will become a must-do for each day of your trip.
